The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally
announced the postponement of the Sept. 10 governorship election in Edo
by two weeks.
Solomon Soyebi, INEC
national Commissioner in-charge of voter education and publicity, made
the disclosure at a press conference at INEC’s office in Benin on
Thursday.
Soyebi said the election would now hold on September 28.
He attributed the postponement to alleged security threat as reported by the security agencies.
Soyebi had earlier in the day announced that “the governorship election will go ahead on Saturday, September 10 as scheduled.”
“We have therefore weighed all the
consequences of a postponement in the election and have resolved to go
ahead with the conduct of the election on Saturday as scheduled,” he had
said.
